Why is the Retail Sales Tax on auto insurance eliminated?

The 2019 budget recently approved by the Newfoundland and Labrador government officially removes the Retail Sales Tax (RST) on auto insurance premiums retroactive to April 15, 2019. As a result of the legislation, any RST paid on auto insurance premiums for policies newly issued or renewed on or after April 15, 2019, will require a rebate.

How will Anthony Insurance apply the Newfoundland and Labrador government decision to eliminate the province's tax on auto insurance?

Anthony Insurance is taking actions to ensure that appropriate rebates are issued to impacted customers.

If you have purchased a new auto insurance policy or renewed your existing policy with us on or after April 15, 2019, we will be in touch with you to provide you with a rebate on the RST by the end of September 2019.

I paid my auto insurance policy premium in full. How will I get my rebate?

If your policy was issued on or after April 15, 2019, and your premium has already been paid in full, a refund cheque for the RST amount that was paid on your automobile insurance will be sent in the mail.

I pay my auto insurance policy premium via monthly payments (Direct Bill). How will I get my rebate?

If your policy was issued on or after April 15, 2019, and you have already started paying your premium through a monthly plan, the tax adjustment will be processed on your premium and your remaining payments will be reduced to reflect the change. You will receive a letter with the details.

I cancelled my auto insurance policy and there was an outstanding balance. How will the rebate be applied?

If your policy was issued on or after April 15, 2019, you are eligible for an RST refund and we will apply the rebate to your balance. You will receive a letter with the details.

I cancelled my auto insurance policy, which had a credit remaining. How will the rebate be applied?

You are eligible for an RST refund and it will be returned to you in a cheque. You will receive a letter with the details.

Am I eligible to a rebate if I have a home insurance policy with Anthony Insurance?

No. The Retail Sales Tax elimination only applies to premiums for auto insurance policies.
